Tools and materials

Before you start, make sure you have everything you need to ensure a successful paint job.

  1. EXTENSION POLE
    Reach the ceiling easily and safely.
  2. PUTTY KNIFE
    Use to repair walls or ceilings with a repair patch, patch holes with plaster, and secure tarps under baseboards on a floor with wall-to-wall carpet.
  3. WALL AND CEILING REPAIR PATCH
    Cover and repair holes that can’t be repaired with plaster.
  4. SPACKLING
    Fill holes made by hardware, or repair cracks and other minor damage.
  5. MEASURING TAPE
    Measure the room to determine the quantity of paint you will need.
  6. SANDPAPER
    Sand repairs or lightly sand surfaces to help the paint adhere well.
  7. SCREWDRIVER
    Use to remove wall plates for light switches and electrical outlets.
  8. PAINT TRAY
    Use with paint rollers.
  9. SMALL PAINT BUCKET
    Keep a smaller bucket handy while you work. Ideal for painting trims or craft projects.
  10. PAINT ROLLER

    Look for a model with a comfortable handle for bigger paint projects.
  11. PAINTER’S TAPE
    Make clean lines and prevent paint from seeping over.

    For textured plaster, stucco, untreated wood, brick, and concrete.

    For walls and lightly textured wood.

  5. STIR STICK
    Mix paint well before using.
